About:
Join Tom Gable, Austin Homkes, and our VWP researchers for a field expedition (2 Days) in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem (GVE) in northern Minnesota learning how the Voyageurs Wolf Project studies and researches wolves in a Northwoods ecosystem.
Each expedition will include:
· a tour of the VWP field base to see and discuss the equipment and other miscellaneous tools used for studying wolves in this ecosystem
· visit GPS-collared wolf locations to interpret and understand their behaviors (e.g., where they have killed prey, ambushed beavers, rested, and so on).
· examining an abandoned den or rendezvous site to see the kind of places wolves rear pups in the GVE
· visit the largest cattle ranch in northern Minnesota where we’ve worked to resolve long standing conflicts between wolves and livestock
· an in-field tutorial on effective ways to set trail cameras with tips and tricks for how to set trail cameras to capture great footage of wildlife
· substantial time to chat/interact/get to know project researchers, and ask any questions you have about the research, wolves, or the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem.
We will provide a more specific agenda along with expected weather conditions the week before each field expedition.
Field lunches will be provided for both field days (please make sure to note any food allergies during registration). Participants should be ready and capable of several hours of strenuous hiking on very uneven terrain off of established hiking trails. We will likely hike 4-5 miles through the rugged Northwoods each day during a field expedition. These field expeditions will take place rain or shine, hot or cold, unless severe weather is forecasted. All registrants will be required to sign a waiver prior to going in the field for this event.
Note: all registration costs go directly toward the Voyageurs Wolf Project and help keep the research and outreach of the project going strong! By registering for a field expedition, you get to see and experience how wolf research is done while providing critical support that helps our project continue into the future!
Lodging is not provided but we highly-recommend staying at the numerous resorts in the Kabetogama, Ash River, or Orr area. Resorts in all of these areas are about 20-30 minutes from our project HQ, which is located sort of in between all of these local communities.
We are not endorsing any particular resort but below are a list of a few of the popular resorts/places to stay in the area:
AshKaNam (Ash River):
Situated right on the Ash River, AshKaNam has a full service bar and restaurant along with rooms and cabins to rent. This is where we will be having the optional dinner on the first night of the expedition.
Melgeorge’s Elephant Lake Lodge and Resort (north of Orr):
Nestled in the southern portion of the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem, Melgeorge’s sits on the shores of the secluded Elephant Lake and has a full service bar and restaurant. Melgeorge’s has a classic Northwoods feel.
The Arrowhead Lodge (Kabetogama):
In Kabetogama, the Arrowhead Lodge has a great view of Lake Kabetogama and Voyageurs National Park with a restaurant and bar that serves food.
There are many other great resorts and places to stay in these areas. For a more detailed list of places to stay check out these links:

Orr Places to Stay:
Note: the resorts that are a bit south/west of Orr will likely be considerably further away from where the field trip will be than resorts in Kabetogama/Ash River). However, if you stay somewhere close to Orr, you will only be 15-20 minute from the field expedition site):
