About the Opera:
The opera Carmen is a product of the romantic era in Europe and its fascination with the exotic. A gypsy, Carmen emerges out of the North African desert and into European consciousness as a projection of the ‘mysterious other’—alluring and sensual, but also dark and dangerous. It is fatal to encounter her. Our production offers a contemporary take on this classic tale of women who dared to usurp male prerogatives.
